**** AMIGA STORY ***************************************** PAGE *************
THE STORY OF THE AMIGA (15/10/94)
WRITTEN BY JACKIE THOMSON
(I TYPED THIS ON A COMMODORE 64 SO PLEASE EXCUSE THE UPPER CASE FELLOW AMIGA
USERS, AS WE ONLY CAVE C64S AT MY WORK).
IT ALL STARTED A LONG LONG TIME AGO... (WELL ACTUALLY IT WAS ABOUT 13 YEARS
AGO, BUT NEVER MIND!)
IN SILICON VALLEY, CALAFORNIA, THE YEAR 1982. THE ARCADE MACHINES ARE NOW
BECOMING LESS POPULAR AS PEOPLE ARE ALL BUYING THEIR OWN CONSOLES AND
HOME COMPUTERS. THERE ARE A LOT OF BIG RUNNERS IN THE MARKET, WHERE ONLY
THE STRONGEST SURVIVE. THE MAIN ONES ARE ATARI, IBM, ACORN AND A FEW OTHERS.
A SMALL COMPANY CALLED HI-TORRO IS IN SILICON VALLEY DEVLOPING WHAT THEY WILL
SOON REVEAL AS THE FIRST 16-BIT CONSOLE. YES, THEY ARE PLANNING TO TAKE THE
INDUSTRY BY STORM BY INTRODUCING A 16-BIT CONSOLE, IT WILL BE JUST LIKE THE
ARCADES. IN IT'S TEAM ARE SOME NOTABLE AMIGA FACES, INCLUDING THE LATE JAY
MINTER. BUT THIS HAS TO BE KEPT A TOP SECRET, OTHER WISE OTHERS MAY COPY
OUR IDEA. SO THE COMPANY PRODUCED JOYSTICKS TO COVER UP THIS MASSIVE
SECRET. ONE OF THEIR MOST WIERD JOYSTICKS WAS THE "GURU MEDITATION", (YES
YOU HAVE HEARD THAT BEFORE) THIS WAS A LARGE SURF BOARD WHICH THE
DESIGNERS WOULD SIT AND MEDITATE ON WHEN THEIR PROJECT DIDN'T WORK PROPERLY,
HENCE THE REASON WHY YOU GET THE GURU MEDITATION BOXES WHEN A PROGRAM ERROR
OCCURS, OR YOUR COMPUTER CRASHES.
EVERY ONE CHIPPED IN AT THE TEAM, EACH OF THEM THROWING IN ANY OLD IDEAS
THAT THEY HAD AND HOPING THAT IT WOULD WORK.
MEANWHILE, A U.S BASED COMPANY CALLED COMMODORE BUSINESS MACHINES WERE
PLANNING TO RELEASE THE WORLDS BEST 8-BIT, THE C64.
A FEW YEARS WENT BY, IT IS NOW 1984. COMMODORE HAS DONE WELL WITH THE
C64 BUT UNFORTUNETLY THEY ARE NOW LOSING MONEY AND COULD FACE
BANKRUPTCY.
BY NOW HI-TORRO HAD ALMOST FINISHED THEIR MEGA COMPUTER, BUT THEN THEY
STOPPED TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT. OH MY GOD! CLOSER EXAMINATION OF
THEIR 16-BIT CONSOLE REVEALED ONE OR TWO VERY SHOCKING THINGS, FOR ONE
IT HAD A KEYBOARD CONNECTION, AND DISK DRIVE, PRINTER AND SERIAL
PORTS AND A RAM EXPANSION SLOT... IT WAS A REAL COMPUTER! THEY WERE
ALMOST FINISHED WHEN ANOTHER SHOCK CAME ALONG... THEY HAD RAN OUT OF MONEY!!
THEY DECIDED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REVEAL THEIR MACHINE AT THE COMPUTER
ENTERTAINEMNT SHOW IN OCTOBER 1984. EVERYONE WAS WOWED AT A MACHINE
THAT WAS ABLE TO DISPLAY 4096 COLOURS ON SCREEN, WITH 8 OCTAVE DIGITAL
STEREO SOUND, AND COULD BE EXPANDED TO UP TO 9 MEGABYTES AND HAD THE POWER
TO USE IT.
THEY ASKED AROUND A FEW COMPANIES IF THEY WERE INTERESTED IN PUTTING
SHARES INTO IT. ATARI WAS THE ONE THEY CHOSE IN THE END, AND THEY PUT
A FEW MONTHS WORK INTO IT. HI-TORRO HAD NOW CALLED THEM SELVES AMIGA,
AND THEIR COMPUTER HAD A NAME, IT WAS CALLED "LORRAINE", WHO WAS ONE
OF THE TEAMS EX-GIRL FRIENDS NAME WHO USED TO ALWAYS BREAK DOWN, HE SAID.
THEY ALSO APPROACHED A TEAM WHO WROTE THE AMIGA DISK OPERATING SYSTEM,
AMIGADOS FOR THEM AND THEY WERE ABOUT SET FOR RELEASE, WHEN COMMODORE
JUMPED IN AND MADE AN OFFER FOR AMIGA THAT THEY COULDN'T REFUSE, AND
SO THEY LEFT ATARI AND WENT WITH CBM AND A NEW COMPANY CALLED
COMMODORE-AMIGA WAS CREATED TO WORK ON THE NEW MACHINE.
THE FIRST AMIGA WAS RELEASED IN MAY 1985, THE A1000.
